    A solenoid is a three-dimensional coil.
In physics, the term solenoid refers to a multiple coil of wire that can be hollow or have a metal core. When a current is passed through the wire, a uniform magnetic field is generated inside the solenoid. Solenoids are very important components. Many physics experiments require a uniform magnetic field for correct operation. Solenoids can also be used as electromagnets or inductors.

In engineering, solenoids are also referred to as transducers, which convert energy into linear motion. A solenoid valve is a complex component in which the most important component is an electromechanical solenoid. An electromechanical solenoid is an electromechanical component that can be used to operate a pneumatic or hydraulic valve. A solenoid switch is a relay that uses an electromechanical solenoid to operate an electrical switch. For example, the starter solenoid in a car is an electromechanical solenoid.
A coil of wire wound into a long, cylindrical coil. When an electric current is passed through the coil, a magnetic field is generated. This magnetic field can move an iron rod placed on its axis. Solenoids are often used to operate mechanical valves connected to the iron rod by turning the current on or off. In most cars, solenoids are used to operate high-current switches that provide power to start the engine.
